Endophthalmitis is an inflammation caused by infection of the eye, with possible loss of vision and the eye itself.
Causes
- complication of all intraocular surgeries, particularly cataract surgery
- penetrating trauma
- retained intraocular foreign bodies
- intravitreal injections
Symptoms
- severe pain
- loss of vision
- red eye
Treatment
You need urgent examination by an ophthalmologist.
Treatment may consist of:
- intravitreal injection of potent antibiotics
- urgent surgery (pars plana vitrectomy) by a retinal surgeon
- eye removal
