Endopthalmitis

Endophthalmitis is an inflammation caused by infection of the eye, with possible loss of vision and the eye itself.

Causes

  • complication of all intraocular surgeries, particularly cataract surgery
  • penetrating trauma
  • retained intraocular foreign bodies
  • intravitreal injections

Symptoms

  • severe pain
  • loss of vision
  • red eye

Treatment

You need urgent examination by an ophthalmologist.

Treatment may consist of:

  • intravitreal injection of potent antibiotics
  • urgent surgery (pars plana vitrectomy) by a retinal surgeon
  • eye removal
